New Project for Plymouth 'Parents Apart'

Separating parents have a complex range of practical and emotional issues to resolve following separation. These issues are usually intricately linked and require practical coordinatedsupport for both parents and their children. A collaboration of third and statutory sector organisations have been awarded a contract from the Department for Children Schools and Families to deliver a pilot project in Plymouth. This will test, through practical means, how best to co-ordinate local services to minimise the negative impact of separation on children’s outcomes.
There are likely to be a wide range of needs experienced by young people and their parents as a result of separation. Three caseworkers will help support parents to focus on the needs of their children alongside meeting their own emotional and practical needs. For example:
- Accessing benefits & entitlements
- Understanding child maintenance options
- Helping children manage change
- Residence and contact
- Making effective cooperative parenting arrangements
There are a number of specialist partners involved who will provide specifically targeted services eg. Individual counselling, legal assistance, family mediation, domestic abuse and drug/alcohol services. The caseworkers will help assist clients to access these services or other relevant agencies when appropriate.
